El Dorado and ESOD

March 21, 2008

Our April 19, 2008 meeting will start off with El Dorado by Trevor Turk. El Dorado is a community web app written in Rails. Trevor will share stories from the trenches including lessons learned and why he chose Git over Subversion.

If you’re launching a Rails app, Yan Pritzker from CohesiveFT will tell you where to put it. Yan will give a brief overview of Elastic Server On-Demand (ESOD), a Rails-based web application that is used to create virtualized servers from a catalog of application components. A demo will be given of how to create a ready-to-go Rails stack and run your application on it without concern about remembering what you did to make the environment work.

Be sure to drop by Meetup.com and RSVP. See you in April!

March 2008 Recap

March 15, 2008

A special note to Morph eXchange: Thank you for the presentation and the pizza! Lincoln Murphy’s review was followed by a live demo of Morph eXchange in action.

Wil Chung capped off our meeting with an overview of Mobtropolis. Wil’s unconventional presentation highlighted features of the Rails-based app. Q&A gave Wil a chance to share war stories from the development effort.

As always, thank you Lee DeForest for a great place to meet!

Homework Before the Meeting...

March 12, 2008

Like a good professor, Lincoln Murphy of Morph eXchange is giving us homework (!) to be completed prior to his 3/15/2008 presentation. Do your homework or the Nuns will have a ruler waiting for your knuckles. Just kidding.

Here’s Lincoln’s assignment in his own words:

In an effort to make my presentation to your group more of a two-way discussion, I would love to have some of your members sign-up and check out the system before I get there. Because this is a closed beta, all users have to be approved before access is granted to the Morph Application Platform.

To expedite the approval of members of your group, please have your members signup at http://www.morphexchange.com/innovator_usa and then send me the username they used. I can fast-track the approval process and get your members deploying Rails apps in no time. If any of your members have already signed up but not been approved yet, go ahead and send me those usernames as well.

So we don’t open Lincoln’s email address up to spammers, I won’t include his email here. Feel free to contact him through Lincoln’s Meetup.com Profile if you’d like to participate. See you Saturday!

More in March

March 11, 2008

Our 3/15/2008 meeting grows richer by the minute. In addition to the Morph eXchange presentation, our own Will Chung will lead us through the development & deployment of one of his Rails apps: Mobtropolis. In Wil’s own words:

Mobtropolis is a social photo scavenger hunt that helps you find interesting things to do in the world around you and keeps you in touch with your friends through photos. The talk will start with the problem and the solution, segway into stories and response. Lastly, we’ll finish with lessons learned thus far, both technical and otherwise.

So be sure to RSVP for Morph eXchange and Mobtropolis in March!
